You're doing beautifully. Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both of you — ask for help early and often. Lactation support in the hospital is one of the most valuable resources you have.
The First 21 Days
- Colostrum is liquid gold. Feed on demand every 1-3 hours. Watch for active swallowing.
- Always place baby flat on their back in a bare crib. Expect frequent waking as their stomach is tiny.
- Normal Meconium ColorSticky, thick, near-black — clearing baby's gut.
- Expected Color: Black/Tarry meconium. Count: 1-2 wet diapers and 1-2 stools daily.
- Call your doctor if
- Watch for extreme lethargy, poor latching, or fewer than 1 wet diaper in the first 24 hours.
